SCHOOL AND PUBLIC LIBRARY AUTHOR VISITS:

Jump-start your reading and writing programs with a school author visit. My programs support Ohio curriculum standards while exciting students about reading, writing, and publishing. I emphasize hard work, persistence, embracing constructive criticism, and recognizing each student's unique gifts. My programs challenge students to be readers, writers, and thinkers!

SCHOOL VISITS:

PROGRAM 1: Becoming an Author for the Young:

Designed for preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade students, I discuss writers and what they do. I also read my book, The Pig and Miss Prudence (some students will help present by helping with props.) Students then return to their rooms to co-author (with me!) their very own book titled My Visit With the Author. Template for the book provided. Schools need a digital camera so students can have their pictures taken with me for the cover of their books. A writing-rich way to create a memory!

30-45 minutes, small groups; 60 minutes large groups.

PROGRAM 2: A Writer’s Life

I discuss the fun, exciting, and downright frustrating parts of life as a writer. I emphasize the importance of persistence in reaching a goal, and how accepting constructive criticism and being willing to rewrite work is key to success. Students see manuscripts in progress, along with editorial notes. I read some of my work, including some first drafts, and the much-improved published version. Students will also get a sneak peak at yet to be released books, and will have plenty of time for questions and answers.

45-60 minutes.

PROGRAM 3:  Author Walk-about

Great for connecting and getting questions answered, I roam the school, dropping in on up to 6 classes for 15 minutes each to answer questions about writing and publishing in a smaller group setting.

Up to 1 and a half hours.

PROGRAM 4: Larger-than-Life Concrete Poetry Workshop An arts-integrated, 2-day program. Day one focuses on poetry workshops for all ages. Day two focuses on using our poems to create one or more larger-than-life (8X8 foot) foam core pigs, covered with poems about what else?--PIGS!

Dual-Author Visit

Having trouble finding something for everyone? Partner with a nearby school to bring myself

and colleague Nancy Roe Pimm for a day of talks and books. Nancy and I will each speak at a school in the morning, and will switch for the afternoon. Because mine is a picture book, I will focus on grades Pre-K through 2. Nancy, whose books are for ages 9 and up will focus on grades 3-5.

Fee: $800/per school. Two nearby schools needed for this program.

PUBLIC LIBRARY VISITS:

Living in the World of Books:

Invite your patrons to a fun and informative hour of book-talk for adults and children. I discuss what it's like to be an author, including the challenges and joys of being a part of the publishing world. I dispell many misconceptions about creating books, answering questions from the audience. I share my nonfiction research and work, present photos and artifacts, and encourage all people to be life-long readers and learners. I share my debut book, The Pig and Miss Prudence, and sell signed copies at all visits.

Public Library Visit Fee:

$150/ 45-60 minute presentation, plus mileage.

Some friends at the Ohioana Library help me as I read.
